Abstract:
This bachelor thesis explores how sound and musik is used in science communication on YouTube, to enhance the performance of a recorded speak track, and how music and sounddesign can enhance the authenticity of the speaker.
The project is based on theory from performance studies where a performance is seen as “to perform to a standard” and observes that twice-learned behaviour makes separating the performer, the performance and authenticity very difficult.
This project combines empirical research with an interview with Henry Reich in which he talks about his approach to authenticity. This interview explores how authenticity is a overall experience from the audience when the story makes sense, and sounddesign and music is smoothly integrated.
As a part of the project a science communication YouTube video was made called “A trip to the sun” where test subjects listened to slight variations of the first minute and chose whatever clip they felt was most authentic. The results showed a clear preference towards a particular microphone and recording scenario, and statements made by the participants indicates that recorded passionate performances might have bigger impact than microphone choice - if you had to choose.
The project was impacted by a low volume of participants in tests, so the results should be taken as a clue about the nature of recorded performances, rather than a clear trend about how to choose microphones, music and sound design.
The conclusion of this study - is that sound and music in science communication on YouTube should support the speak and the story. If sound design is added there should a point to it, or the audience might be taken out of the story, and the performance might not live up to the standard. Authenticity in science communication on YouTube occurs when all parts of the video works together, and the performer takes a part of, or their whole personality onto the stage.
